Art statement of intent:

 

At Emmanuel, Art is a key component of our broad and balanced curriculum as we aspire for all children to ‘live life in all its fullness.’

 

We intend for our art curriculum to:

 

• Fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for art.
• Reflect and celebrate the diversity of our school community by learning about artists from ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds.
• Provide a broad and balanced curriculum and ensure the progressive development of knowledge and skills.
• Enable children to begin to develop an awareness of the visual and tactile elements including; colour, pattern and texture, line and tone, shape, form and space, foster enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts.
• Develop a knowledge of significant artists, craftspeople and designers, increase critical awareness of the roles and purposes of art and design in different times and cultures, and analyse works using the language of art and design and develop a cross-curricular approach to the use of art and design in all subjects.

 

 

Introduction to art

The Art curriculum at Emmanuel is carefully planned and sequenced and aims for pupils to experience a progressive development of knowledge and skills whilst instilling an appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts. Children enjoy involvement in a range of visual, tactile and sensory experiences, which enable them to communicate what they see, think and feel through the use of the elements of colour, texture, form and pattern. Through regular classroom discussion and practise, Art promotes careful observation and an appreciation of the world around us. When learning about the roles and functions of art, children are able to explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and on different periods and cultures. 

 

 

Art skills from EYFS to Year 6

In Reception and KS1 Art is taught in half-termly units throughout the year, introducing the key vocabulary, recording and exploring ideas and using a variety of tools and mediums. Children will begin to review their work and say what they think and feel about it as well as identifying what they might change or develop. They will also experiment with the visual elements of line, shape, pattern and colour.

In KS2 Art is continued to be taught half-termly throughout the year and builds on the foundation of skills children acquired in KS1. Children will compare ideas, methods and approaches in their own and others work and say what they think and feel about them. Children will continue to experiment with materials and techniques and explore the roles and purposes of artists, craftspeople and designers working in different times and cultures.

 

We enrich the children’s experience of Art through a wide range of trips which are embedded within the curriculum and help children fully immerse themselves in it. Alongside this, our cross-curricular approach to learning seeks to enable children to continuously revisit key skills and learning throughout their time at school.
